Everyone loves Ryan Gosling (literally – I’ve never met a person who didn’t give into his charms). Now, he may not have been known as a cool indie rocker in the Canadian ’90s, but he was definitely a Canadian in the states singing songs on Mickey Mouse Club and dancing at talent shows, and this was all before he was an nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for Damien Chazelle’s La La Land. He’s also been in a bunch of films with great soundtracks (Jeremy Enigk’s moody whatnot broke The United States of Leland‘s heart, Broken Social Scene’s music MADE Half Nelson’s whole again, and Cliff Martinez’s score really *ahem* drove Drive) and occasionally, the beautiful baby duck has even sang a line or two on screen. Let’s take a look back at the top 10 times the pride of London, Cornwall AND Burlington, Ontario sang and danced his way into our hearts.
“Borriquito” The Place Beyond the Pines
One of my favourite Gosling flicks finds him playing a down and out bike stunt thief guy who only sort of tries to live up to his fatherly responsibilities. And he sings kids songs about burritos and donkeys.
“You Always Hurt the One You Love” Blue Valentine
And a million boys and girls (and Eddie Vedder) got out their ukuleles and shared YouTube videos.
“Cry For You” Mickey Mouse Club
Justin! JC! The other guy! Ryan! EEEEEEEEEEEE!
“L.O.V.E.” Lars and the Real Girl
I lent my copy of this movie to a guy who became a cop and I never got it back.
“When a Man Loves a Woman” Some Talent Show
Canada’s GOT talent!
“Put Me in the Car” Online Single from 2007
I didn’t know this existed until yesterday. Wow. Was there a MySpace page??
“In the Room Where You Sleep” Dead Man’s Bones
I really liked this record, and I usually play it on Halloween to scare the kids away. This live-off-the-floor version is better because you can hear the children’s choir in it better.
Dancing on Breaker High
One time I knew this girl who claimed that Ryan Gosling was her friend’s cousin and that Gosling kissed her on the cheek and told her she was pretty and she squealed cuz she knew him from Breaker High.
Dancing in Crazy Stupid Love
Before Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling got all Oscar buzzy in La La Land, they broke out this “move” from Dirty Dancing. Those abs DO look airbrushed, man.
Dancing in Remember the Titans to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”
I’ve never seen this movie but I think it’s about remembering the titans. And dancing teenage boys. And Seth from American History X before he shaved his head, but after he was a bully on Boy Meets World.
